The first few minutes of each day are some of the most important minutes of the day. Join us every Monday – Friday as we spend time applying God’s word to our lives. It’s just 5 minutes a day, 5 days a week.
Message from Bobby McGraw on August 9, 2022
In this episode of the weekday podcast, Pastor Bobby McGraw reflects on the value of time, reminding us that we have 86,400 seconds each day to use wisely. Drawing from Psalm 90, he encourages us to treasure our time, invest it in relationships, manage it well, and enjoy the moments we have with others. By making the most of each day, we can build happy memories and live with purpose.
Well, hey there. Thanks so much for being on the weekday podcast today. We're glad you're here. Our hope is that this is encouraging.
Today, I want to think about the 86,400, not dollars that we get every day, but seconds that we get every day. Now think about that. We get 86,400 seconds. If those seconds were dollars, and if those dollars disappeared at midnight, I guarantee you that all of us would figure out a way to spend it.
Well, the truth is we get seconds. We get that many seconds, but we don't get to roll it over. We don't get to decide, hey, I'm going to use that later. We have to use it today.
So recently Pastor Chuck and I did a teaching around this idea of the power and just the importance of time. And it was all built off of this verse that comes from Psalm 90, written by Moses himself. And he said, "teach us to realize the brevity of life so that we may grow in wisdom." "Teach us to realize the brevity of life so that we may grow in wisdom."
So today I want to encourage you to do that. And the first way is the T in time, stands for treasure .We need to treasure the time that we have. We need to realize that today is a gift. In fact, somebody said it this way, that yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. And that's why it's called the present. You can make more money and you could probably be nursed back to health, but man, you can't make more time. So T is to treasure it.
I is to invest it, to invest it. You can't save time. You only get to invest it. And the places that we invest our time reveals what is important to us. We can't save it. We can only spend it and invest it. I love what Billy Graham said. He said, "time is the capital that God has given us to invest. People are the stocks in which we are to invest our time. And it doesn't matter whether they're blue chips or penny stocks or even junk bonds, we get to invest our time."
The M stands for manage it. God is the creator of time and he's the one that controls it. But when it's put in our laps, we get to decide what are the big things that we're going to put on our schedule first. If we're not careful, we'll let the little things crowd out the really great things God wants us to do.
And then the E stands for enjoy it. Enjoy the time that you have. Time with your family. It ought to be enjoyable. Time with your friends. It ought to be enjoyable. And one way to do that is to say no to the things that are time robbers. What are those things that pull you away from the most important relationships in your life? And say no to those things. And then say yes to making happy memories. One day we're all going to pass away. And one day there's going to be somebody talking about us at our funeral. Can you imagine how powerful it would be to leave them with plenty of happy memories that they can talk about?
So today, treasure it. Invest it. Manage it. And enjoy it. And as you do that, I think you'll find peace. You'll find better health. You'll have stronger relationships. And you'll find your purpose for living.
Have a great day. See you back here soon.
Chuck is the Lead Pastor at Sugar Hill Church. He’s been the Lead Pastor since 2011, but he’s been around Sugar Hill Church since 2008. Since day one, Chuck’s passion has been to encourage others with this one big belief: “You can do this! You can love God with all your heart, mind and soul and be normal!" You will often hear him say, “the Bible is a very big deal, Jesus is the very biggest deal and living that out always involves serving people here and around the globe.” Chuck's passion is to graciously lead people to Jesus and create a simple path for them to grow in their faith. Some of his goals are to reduce the dropout rate in our local schools, serve with our missions partners well, lead our church and families with a healthy fiscal plan, and in the future, to provide transitional housing for single moms. Chuck and his wife, Jenny, stay plenty busy with six daughters, three son-in-laws, five grandkids and an awesome dog, Kirby. They are foodies and enjoy eating through the Atlanta Magazine Top 50 Restaurants. Chuck’s favorite things to do include fishing, reading, writing and cheering on the Georgia Bulldogs!
Bobby serves as both the Associate Pastor and the Teaching Pastor at Sugar Hill Church. He has been on staff here since December, 2008 (where he started part-time in Student Ministry). Bobby’s passion comes from a love of seeing the light-bulb go on for folks. Whether it’s in a small group, a NEXT gathering, or during a weekend message, he loves seeing people “get it” and apply the truth to their lives. As one of our pastors here, Bobby helps individuals take the next steps in their faith, he helps the church fulfill its God-given mission, and he gives day-to-day direction to our Adult Ministries, Communications, and Finance teams. In his spare time, you can find Bobby riding his motorcycle, working out, reading, or eating gas station tacos. He and his wife, Laura, have been married since January, 2011, and they have a very “manly” 10lb cockapoo named Ollie. He would love to connect more, so find him on social media (@bobbymcgraw) or check out his blog at yourbetterstory.com.
