What Is the Kingdom of God?– What If It’s Already Here?

Jesus said the Kingdom wasn’t defined by borders or politics — it was defined by His presence. “The Kingdom of God is near!” (Mark 1:15 NLT)

That means it’s Right here. Right now. Not someday. Not “after I get my act together.” Not “one day when heaven shows up.”

It means the Kingdom is and has broken into the world — our world — through Jesus.

The Kingdom Starts Small but Changes Everything

Jesus described the Kingdom as a mustard seed: “It’s the smallest of all seeds, but it becomes the largest of garden plants.” (Matthew 13:31–32, NLT)

That’s how the Kingdom gets planted — not with fireworks, but with faith.

Not with a shout, but with a seed.

The Kingdom doesn’t come from the top down — it comes from the inside out.

The Kingdom Is More Than a Place — It’s a Way of Life

When the Pharisees asked Jesus when the Kingdom would come, He said: “The Kingdom of God can’t be detected by visible signs… For the Kingdom of God is already among you.” (Luke 17:20–21, NLT)

The Kingdom shows up every time God’s will gets done — here on earth, just like it is in heaven.

  • You choose to forgive instead of getting even — that’s the Kingdom.
  • You sit with someone who’s hurting instead of avoiding their pain — that’s the Kingdom.
  • You share your table with someone different than you — that’s the Kingdom.

It’s not about what you build; it’s about who you become.

That means the Kingdom isn’t something we wait for. It’s something we walk in.

The Kingdom Looks Upside-Down to the World

Jesus kept surprising people with how the Kingdom actually works. He said the poor are blessed. The mourners are comforted. The meek inherit the earth (Matthew 5:3–5 NLT)

In God’s Kingdom

  • Power looks like humility.
  • Victory looks like surrender.
  • Greatness looks like service.

It’s what Paul meant when he wrote, “For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of living a life of goodness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 14:17, NLT)

Let's put that in everyday language:

  • It’s not about the show — it’s about the Spirit.
  • It’s not about rules — it’s about a relationship.
  • It’s not about what you can control — it’s about Who you can trust.

The Kingdom Moves Through God’s People

That’s why Jesus said, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need.” (Matthew 6:33, NLT)

You and I aren’t waiting on Heaven; Heaven is waiting on us to live like citizens of the Kingdom.

The Kingdom Is Here — and Still Coming

Revelation 11:15 says, “The world has now become the Kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He will reign forever and ever.”

So yes — we live in a world with pain, cancer, addiction, gun violence, political strife and heartbreak. But every time the light of Jesus breaks through that darkness, we get a glimpse of what’s coming.

  • Every time love overcomes hate — that’s a preview of the Kingdom.
  • Every time peace replaces panic — that’s a glimpse of the King.

Living Kingdom First

So, how do you and I live like citizens of the Kingdom?

  • Seek the King daily.
    • Don’t just look for blessings; look for the Blesser.
    • The more you focus on Jesus, the more naturally His Kingdom shows up in you.
  • Serve with open hands.
    • In the Kingdom, your success isn’t measured by how much you collect, but by how much you release.
  • Speak hope boldly.
    • The Kingdom grows when we tell the story of grace — the story that saved us.
  • Stand steady.
    • Hebrews 12:28 says we’re receiving “a Kingdom that is unshakable.”
    • When everything else trembles — hold on to the One who doesn’t.

Friend, you are exactly who Jesus came for.

  • The good news is not that you have to find the Kingdom.
  • The good news is that the Kingdom has already come looking for you.

“Since we are receiving a Kingdom that is unshakable, let us be thankful and please God by worshiping Him with holy fear and awe.”(Hebrews 12:28, NLT)
