When we take Communion, we’re not just remembering a past event but actively participating in the life Jesus designed for us.

1 | The Local Church Is a Family

"All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer. A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders.  And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity—all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.” (Acts 2:42-47)

2 | The Local Church Is a Place of Unity

"When we bless the cup at the Lord’s Table, aren’t we sharing in the blood of Christ? And when we break the bread, aren’t we sharing in the body of Christ? And though we are many, we all eat from one loaf of bread, showing that we are one body." (1 Corinthians 10:16-17)

But, Communion reminds us that in Christ, we are ONE.

"The more genuine and deeper our community becomes, the more everything else between us recedes; the more clearly and purely Jesus Christ and His work will become the one and only thing that is vital between us.” - Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Communion serves as a divine reset button, reminding us that our unity in Christ holds greater significance than any differences we may have.

3 | The Local Church Is a Place of Spiritual Nourishment

"So Jesus said again, ‘I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you cannot have eternal life within you. But anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise that person at the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him.’" (John 6:53-56)

Jesus never intended that we would be either a museum, dead to the excitement of the risen Christ, or a concert, where we were to endure hero worship of superstar preachers and musicians.

"Then Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.’" (Matthew 11:28-30)

“Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.” - Corrie Ten Boom

Communion is not merely a ritual; it’s a divine invitation to surrender, trust, and find peace in the One who holds our lives in His hands.

4 | The Local Church Is a Place of Hope and Expectation

"For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again.” (1 Corinthians 11:26)

We proclaim that He is not done, that His kingdom is coming, and that one day, we will sit at the great banquet table - the Grown Up Table with Him in Heaven.

“If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.” - C.S. Lewis

Communion anchors us in that expectation, keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus.

When we break the bread and drink from the cup, we are reminded that despite our differences, we belong to the same body and are saved by the same grace.

May we remember that we are not just individuals in a room—we are the body of Christ, united by His sacrifice, and called to live in love and service to one another.
