The Longing for Joy

Luke 2:40-48

They Lost Jesus

“The presence of Jesus isn’t just the source of joy—it’s the secret to
sustaining it.”

1: Recognize Where You’ve Lost Him

“But they, assuming that He was in the group, went a day’s journey; and
then they began looking for Him…” (Luke 2:44 NASB95).

Where might you have lost Him?

  • Did you stop prioritizing time in prayer?
  • Did you let bitterness or stress creep in?
  • Did the demands of life drown out His gentle voice?

“You can’t recover joy if you don’t first recognize where you’ve lost it.”

2: Return to Where You Left Him

“And when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, searching
for Him” (Luke 2:45 NASB95).

Jesus hasn’t moved.

“The way back to Jesus is simple: retrace your steps and return to
where you left Him.”

3: Reconnect with Him

“They found Him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, both listening
to them and asking them questions” (Luke 2:46 NASB95).

“Joy isn’t restored by doing more; it’s restored by sitting with Jesus.”

The Invitation to Joy

Where do you find yourself today?

  • Are you assuming Jesus is near, but realizing He feels distant?
  • Do you need to retrace your steps and return to Him?
  • Are you ready to stop rushing and reconnect with His presence?

Practical Next Steps

  1. Pause Daily
  2. Reprioritize Worship
  3. Celebrate Jesus

“Joy isn’t something you chase; it’s a gift you receive when you return
to Jesus.”
