The Table Preview - The People Who Miss Christmas

General Reflection

  1. What part of this sermon resonated with you the most, and why?
  2. Have you ever felt like you’ve “missed Christmas” in some way? What caused you to feel that way?
  3. Why do you think so many people—even those surrounded by Christian traditions—struggle to experience the true meaning of Christmas?

The Innkeeper: Missing Christmas Due to Preoccupation

  1. The innkeeper was too busy to notice the miracle happening right in front of him. In what ways does busyness impact your ability to focus on Jesus during the Christmas season?
  2. What practical steps can you take this year to “make room” for Christ in your life during the holidays?

Herod: Missing Christmas Due to Fear

  1. Herod saw Jesus as a threat to his control. Have you ever resisted surrendering an area of your life to Christ because of fear or uncertainty? What happened when you did (or didn’t) surrender?
  2. What does surrendering to Jesus look like in your daily life, especially during the holiday season?

The Religious Leaders: Missing Christmas Due to Indifference

  1. The religious leaders had knowledge of the Scriptures but didn’t act on it. What are some ways we can move from knowing about Jesus to actively living for Him?
  2. How can familiarity with the Christmas story sometimes make us indifferent? What are ways to rekindle awe and wonder for Jesus’ birth?

Jerusalem: Missing Christmas Due to Religion

  1. How can religious rituals sometimes distract from a relationship with Christ? Have you ever experienced this in your own life?
  2. What are some ways to keep your focus on Jesus rather than on traditions or rituals during this season?

Nazareth: Missing Christmas Due to Familiarity

  1. The people of Nazareth struggled to see Jesus as anything more than Joseph’s son. How can familiarity with Jesus or church culture cause us to take Him for granted?
  2. What are some practices that help you rediscover the wonder and significance of Jesus’ birth?

Personal Application

  1. Which of the five groups of people who “missed Christmas” do you identify with the most? Why?
  2. How can you intentionally slow down and focus on Christ’s presence this Christmas?
  3. If you were explaining the meaning of Christmas to someone who has never experienced it, what would you say?

For Deeper Reflection

  1. In John 1:12, it says, “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name.” What does it mean to “receive” Christ? How has this changed your life, or how could it?
  2. Who in your life might be missing Christmas right now? How can you lovingly point them toward Jesus this season?
