Vitals: A Spiritual Check-Up

1 | The Heart: Seat of Desire and Affection

What Men have to say about the Heart

Where emotions shape perception and where moral and spiritual decisions originate.

The Natural State of the Heart

“The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately sick; who can understand it?”

Jeremiah 17:9

“The LORD saw that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”

Genesis 6:5

Our hearts, apart from God, are spiritually terminal.

Christ’s Healing for the Heart

“I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. … And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.”

Ezekiel 36:26

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”

Psalm 147:3

When we come to Him, believing in His sacrifice, He purifies our hearts and fills them with new desires—to love God and others.

2 | The Head: Mind and Understanding

The Natural State of the Head

“The mind [when] governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.”

Romans 8:7-8

“They are treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God.”

2 Timothy 3:4

“So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.”

Romans 8:6

Sometimes it’s not the enemy, it’s the INNER ME!

Christ’s Healing for the Head

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

Romans 12:2

“We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”

2 Corinthians 10:5

3 | Hope: Where Our Soul Anchors

The Natural State of Hope

“For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it.”

Romans 8:24-25

Christ’s Healing for Hope

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.”

1 Peter 1:3

“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.”

Hebrews 6:19

“For I know the plans I have for YOU, declares the Lord, “plans to prosper YOU and not harm YOU, plans to give YOU hope and a future.”

Jeremiah 29:11

The Ultimate Check-Up

  • Heart: Sin makes it deceitful, but Christ renews it with love and purity.
  • Head: Sin darkens the mind, but Christ gives clarity and truth.
  • Hope: Sin leaves us adrift, but Christ anchors us in living hope.

As you leave today, ask the Great Physician these three questions:

  • Is my heart surrendered to Jesus?
  • Is my mind being renewed by His Word?
  • Is my hope fully fixed on His promises?
